3 Stamp/card kits for TSE

Long ago, before the flu hit…. there were some card kits I did for Mary at TSE. They use those gorgeous little Snag’em Stamps from Imaginisce and some lovely papers from Pink Paislee. All three of the cards have moving parts and are very easy to make. So check them out instore at TSE.





Upcoming Graphic 45 class at 123

So I am sort of back in the land of the living after a very sick week with all the kids and I down with the flu. At least I am out of bed for a few hours today,

Xmas in July blind card mini cc

uhm yeah – insert red face blinkie here – totally forgot to post this up the other week when we did it.

I ran a blind card challenge as part of the Xmas in July cards comp – was a great night with some totally awesome cards made by the girls in the TSE forum. My poor little card was very eclipsed.

Although the papers are not Xmas ones – Kaiser Grandiose – the card has the sort of rich colouring found in many Xmas ranges. Still loving the string too! For those of you who saw my earlier Grandiose layout – yep – the card is based on that and is made from the leftovers of that layout.


Strong and Simple – Graphic 45 (boy layout)

I adore the Graphic 45 ranges and find them very well suited to masculine layouts. This time I have focussed on a single range within the recent releases –Transatlantique. The colours are very striking and rich: – maroons, earthy yellows (almost a golden colour), rich creams, and dark blue and greens. The darker colours are somewhat sombre looking, but the richer yellows manage to brighten the intensity of the colours when you combine them together.

I’ve kept to the simple again, with a boy layout that uses only 3 papers from the range and only 3 colours: – black, maroon and that gorgeous rich gold colour. The best photos to use with these sorts of colours are ones with strong colours in them themselves. As you can see from the photo – I’ve matched up the black and reddish browns to the black and maroon in the patterned papers.

I love this photo of DS2 – it has strong clean lines and is a very simple shot that draws you to his face – the eyes and the slight smile are what demand your attention. Aside from framing the shot around his face – I used the portrait setting on my camera, which left the face perfectly in focus, but the background is blurred. When I edited the image I added a ‘glow’ feature that slightly softens and brightens the face – which further makes you look to the face as the primary interest in the photo.

To complement this, I have designed the layout to keep that focus on his face. The elements of the layout are framed about the photo – drawing your attention around it and back to it, no matter where you start looking at the layout.

To allow me to keep the layout interesting, yet simple – I mirrored it. So the top half is a mirror of the bottom and in some ways the left mirrors the right. I’ve also layered the light and dark colours to add further interest and visual depth. It’s not a perfect mirroring – as this can appear contrived and awkward looking – but the repetition of elements is obvious.

To help integrate the layout I’ve made the title part of the journalling – so as you read down the journalling on the right you need to move across the title at the bottom to finish off the last sentence. The corner stitching acts as a directional frame as well, bringing you back to the photo.


I must be onto a winner with the Graphic 45 papers – all my boys want layouts done using them and you all know how difficult it is to get teenage boys volunteering to have their photo taken so they can have a layout done. It’s nice for a change to have them offer to sit for the photos without the fight.

As an added bonus, one side of the papers in this range has a travel theme and I have seen them used to very dramatic affect with one local scrapper’s European holiday shots.


Stitching – and a splash of ink (BG Wisteria)

There was a thread in the 123 forum where we all discussed that fact that we don’t use paint as much as we could. I’m guilty of that too – I dont even use it for my alphas any more – mostly I just ink them or do some sort of special finish. So I set myself the challenge to use some paint on a layout and not just to colour the alphas. I also wanted to have a little play with using stitching to add to the layout design. At least that’s where the thinking started – it kinda morphed from there.

The idea was to use stitching and some random daubs of paint to help frame the layout – the stitching part worked out fine, but I didn’t have a paint in a purple that matched my papers – so I needed an alternative to that – and I found the right colour purple in my Tim Holtz alcohol inks. You can still use paint in the way that I have – or Glimmermist, or ink of any kind.

I was working with those gorgeous BG Wisteria papers – lovely golds, creams, purples and soft greens and really wanted to feature the lovely purples in the paper. I was planning on a less cluttered look to the layout so that the paint and stitching would be the main focus – but we lost that somewhere under all the detail again. Sorry – just can’t help myself, 🙂 I have to keep adding things.

So the basic idea was to use the stitching as a frame to the patterned paper – to do this I cut a bit of rubbish paper into the same size as the patterned paper (the lovely Finch) I was using and angled it slightly over the top of my patterned paper. This gave me an edge along which to make my sewing guide holes. I chose a purple embroidery thread that matched the paper and stood out from the cardstock.

Then I added a few drops of Wild Plum, Raisin, Gold Mixatives and Blending solution to my alcohol ink pad and just randomly stamped all around the patterned paper and stitching. The space is there because I knew I was putting something else over it and I could not see the point of stamping where it would not be seen.


This makes a lovely base for the layout now. The mottled look with the purples and shimmery gold is really cool.

To add to the stitching I then pricked holes into the leaves I cut from one of the patterned papers (Primrose).
Using the purple thread again I stitched down the leaf. Once done, I pinched the leaves a little on either side and shaped them a little to give them some dimension. Then I Kindyglitzed the flowers they were tucked into.


I’ve ended up coming up with what I think is a new chippy technique – I will save explaining that for another time, but as a hint – you need embossing powder, alcohol inks and Kindyglitz plus a little scrapping magic. So how is this for cool???


And I had a lot of fun with my new chippy technique – here I altered an old button to give it a new lease on life. The flower it is on is made up of a couple of layers of an old Prima flower and I inked a white 10cm Green Tara flower the same way I did the inking on the paper/cardstock.


So here is the finished layout – all about some feet. Lol – yep – all that pretty paper and it goes with some dirty feet. 🙂 A little more gentle mother nagging for my eldest son and how he needs to be a good role model for his younger sister. Lmao – he likes the layout, but I don’t think he read the journalling.

Creative Imaginations – Amore

Yeah yeah – so I suck at blogging lately. 😦 Sorry about that.

Catching up a little on stuff I did over the last couple of months. For June I worked with the CI Amore range for Mary at TSE. Yummo stuff – all that gold and those lush flourishes.

You gotta love foil papers – there is something lush and decadent about them. I have a huge collection of them – mostly from Creative Imaginations – but have very few layouts that actually use them.

A bit sad really.

I think it is the enormity of actually cutting one up that scares most of us off actually using them. That and the fact they are just so gorgeous to look, at it seems a shame to put stuff over them. But put stuff all over them you have to – for many of them are simply too much if you plaster them all over the layout and don’t put anything over them.

So I took to my Creative Imaginations Amore range with a pair of scissors and my trusty craft knife. The joy of CI ranges is that they produce quality matching embellishments that are also foiled – so you can keep to the theme of the range. In this case it meant some gorgeous sticker shapes, layered flower-brads, fabric brads and coordinating rubons.

So a cutting I went.

With the first layout – Love – I’ve opted to use a half sheet of the Wings paper together with some black Bazzill cardstock. This allows the rich golds and creams of the patterned paper to really stand out, as well as matching the colours in my photo. I cut into the pair of foiled wings that form the main decorative part of the paper and tucked my photo into them to help make a ‘corner’ for the photo. There is also the added bonus of it being where Madame is looking – so it almost looks like she is focused on the wings themselves.

Interesting how you can look back at your own work and wonder what on earth possessed you to do that. Looking at it now – months later – I would go back and ink the edges of the photo to give it more definition – at the time I thought it was fine for the simple look I wanted, but now I have itchy fingers and want to add the ink.


I’ve added to the foiled wings by placing a chippy winged heart over it – the heart has been inked, embossed with gold and had Walnut ink crystals wetted, applied and dried to it to make the old, rusted look it has. I’ve finished it off with a Bronze Kaiser rhinestone and am impressed with how well it matches the paper. This close-up gives you an idea of the texture this technique gives – just awesome.


The other chipboard pieces – the title, heart and fleur de lys – the Green Tara flower and the shipping tag (which I journalled on) have all been given the same treatment. Although it is rather a grungy look, it complements the rich colours and patterns of the papers really well.



The compass is actually a clear stamp by Tattered Angels – the people who make Glimmermist, but I have not used it as a stamp. I love the bits of pre-stamped acetate that come with clear stamps – it’s the easiest thing in the world to pop one under the scanner and – within minutes – have the perfect image for printing out (using your computer) onto either paper or (as in this case) transparency sheets. It makes it so much easier then to move it about your layout and get the placement just right. I’ve stitched some gold thread onto the middle pattern of the compass and added one of the foiled sticker hearts as a centerpiece.

The layered flower brads are great, in that you can pull them apart and mix and match them to your own needs. Don’t be afraid to modify this type of pre-made embellishment. I took the pearl brad centre out of one of the flowers and added my own Kaiser rhinestone to make it match in with the rest of the layout better. In this close-up you can also see the altered Green Tara flower more closely.


From the left-overs of this layout I used the other half sheet of patterned paper to make a card for Hubby for our up-coming 20th anniversary. This time I cut the heart out completely and used it over a less richly decorated bit of the patterned paper. I’ve embossed the edges of the paper with gold embossing powder rather than inking them and it gives it a lovely finish. Some appropriate rubon-words from the range and some more of the layered flower brads complete this simple, but effective card.


The second layout – Sweetheart – uses the pearl flocked paper from the range. In my opinion, One Love is just perfect for wedding photos – the flocking gives it a gloriously rich texture – very opulent. I don’t have any wedding photos that suit it though – but I did have some of Madame playing angel that did.


I am somewhat disappointed in the final layout – it looked much better in my head I think. Part of the problem is still the issue of me and white space. There is not enough in this layout for me to be comfortable with it, but it just did not work with my usual style. Oh well – you win some you lose some.

The photos of this layout don’t do it justice though. The backing cardstock was given a light spray of Gold Glimmermist, which gave it a lovely golden shimmer and the texture of the flocking is gorgeous – it gives the layout a very rich feel.

Because of this I have kept the embellishments to a minimum. I used a Heidi Swapp mega mask to create the shape I cut the patterned paper into. It was a simple matter to lay the mask on the patterned paper and trace an outline on it and then cut it out. Using another segment from the mega mask (the Bracket one) I pricked a pattern out for stitching and then hand-drew in another stitching line. Gold metallic thread makes a fantastic contrast to the white flocking

In this close-up you can see the stitching, the glorious texture of the flocking – and the gold foil paper I punched out to use as an embellishment. The rose is an awesome find too – though it really is a little ‘thick’ for using on layouts. The sticker title you see is another from the sticker sheet in the range.


My tip for the week came from this layout – and it was a follow-up to Tanya’s one a few weeks previously about using masks. I have quite a few – but I rarely use them as masks. I’ve already mentioned about using them as templates for cutting out shapes or for stitching, but they can also be used in a more traditional stamping sense. Rather than use the mask itself though, you use the frame it came in. Check my tip in the forum for full details.


Sadly – the embossing I did with this technique did not come out as well as I had hoped – as the flocking produced a different finish to the embossing compared to the non-flocked paper and this gave a very odd look to the embossed flourish. I guess we live and learn.

The final layout – Love – uses a richly coloured cardstock as a frame for an entire sheet of the foiled Our Bliss paper. It’s matched to the deeper red of the paper range and provides a great contrast to the golds and creams of the patterned paper.


To make the photo mat I cut a huge square out of the backing cardstock – with the patterned paper over it you don’t really need it there and it is more economical than using a half sheet of new cardstock. Scrooge McScrapper eat your heart out!! The mat and patterned paper were embossed along the edges with gold embossing powder – though the mat was given a very fine edge of it.

To make more of a feature of the foil pattern I cut out some of it so that I could place it over the photo – but only a little – as you risk swamping your photo with foil if you use too much. Another of the sticker winged hearts was used to ‘frame’ a corner of the photo – and I layered a heart sticker over this.


Yet another sticker provides the title to the layout and indeed the first word in the journalling. A couple more of the flower brads (this time used with the fabric brads as centres) here and there and the layout is complete. Far less embellishing than you usually find on one of my layouts – but rich and interesting to look at all the same.


From the leftover bit of cardstock I cut out of this layout I made a little coupon holder for a friend, whose Hubby is off interstate for work purposes. A strip of left over patterned paper, some more of the stickers, a little embossing and one Green Tara flower later and she has a small coupon book into which she stapled some coupons entitling him to a kiss, a cuddle etc (you get the picture) when he gets home.
